1- Features of the Carpet

This carpet's weft and warp are cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns are entirely hand-spun using a traditional kirman technique. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with natural dyes, known as root dyes. For example, to obtain the red color, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, which transfer their color to the yarn; such yarns are called root-dyed yarns. Carpets made from root-dyed yarns develop a shinier appearance over time with use.

Additionally, this carpet is a premium quality product in terms of weaving density and is woven using the Turkish knot technique, also known as the double knot method. This feature makes it more durable and longer-lasting compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 650,000 hand knots have been tied in this carpet.

  • Weaving Type: Handwoven

2- History of the Carpet

Sultani carpets are an important part of the rich carpet-weaving tradition of the Ottoman Empire. These carpets were produced especially in the 16th and 17th centuries for use in Ottoman palaces and significant locations. They were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were specially made for the residences of palace residents and high-ranking diplomats within the Ottoman Empire.

These carpets typically feature motifs inspired by Ottoman cultural and artistic traditions, such as flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols. These motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the carpet as well as the era in which it was woven. Today, Sultani carpets are usually produced in colorful styles that harmonize with both modern and classic furniture designs.

3- Cleaning Instructions

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material and type of dirt. Since this carpet is made from wool yarns dyed with root dyes, chemical-containing carpet shampoos or detergents should not be used. If any liquid spills on the carpet, the affected area should first be blotted thoroughly with a paper towel, then cleaned by gently scrubbing with a cloth and white bar soap foam.

It is crucial to act quickly when something is spilled on the carpet because if the liquid remains without wiping for a long time, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much harder to remove. Lastly, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this carpet to a professional handwoven carpet cleaner you trust. If you reside in Istanbul, you can contact us for carpet cleaning services.
