1- Carpet Features

This carpet’s warp and weft are cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns are entirely hand-spun using the kirman technique. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with root dyes, which means they are colored using natural materials. For example, to obtain the red color, the wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Carpets made from root-dyed yarns develop a shinier appearance over time with use.
Additionally, this carpet is a high-quality piece in terms of weaving density, woven with the Turkish knot technique, also known as the double knot method. Thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 400,000 hand knots were used in the weaving of this carpet.

2- Carpet History

Sultani carpets are an important part of the rich carpet weaving tradition of the Ottoman Empire. These carpets were produced primarily in the 16th and 17th centuries for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues. They were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were specially made for the residences of palace inhabitants and high-ranking diplomats. These carpets generally carry motifs reflecting the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire.
Motifs such as flowers, trees, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are used in Sultani carpets. These motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the carpet as well as traces of the era in which they were woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in colorful designs to harmonize with both modern and classic style furniture.

3- Cleaning Instructions

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made from wool yarn dyed with root dyes, shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on the carpet, first blot the affected area thoroughly with a paper towel, then gently clean the spot with a cloth using foam made from white soap bars.
It is important to note that immediate action is critical when something is spilled on the carpet. If the liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain penetrates the warp and becomes much harder to remove.
Finally, we recommend entrusting the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner experienced in handwoven carpets. If you reside in Istanbul, you can contact us for carpet cleaning services.
